Meriden, Connecticut was founded as a town in 1806 as a town and became an incorporated city in 1867.  Meriden has a sister city in England for which it was named, Meriden, West Midlands.  In the 1800s Meriden was a major manufacturing center producing mainly silverware.  This is where Meriden got its nickname “The Silver City”.  Meriden also produced:  glassware, metal ware, guns, and musical instruments.   In 1860, Abraham Lincoln, came to Meriden on a stump speech to win the Republican Presidential Nomination.  Meriden, Connecticut is most famous for having the largest public city owned park in the state – Hubbard Park.  The park was donated to the city of Meriden by Walter Hubbard of the Bradley and Hubbard Company.  Meriden started off with a population of just 1000 people in 1806 and now has a population of over 60,000 people.
